THE GRO INDEX


The General Register Office has on file certificates of all reported Births, Marriages and Deaths of the population of the UK from mid-1837 to date.  An index to these certificates is available on line, searchable by name and year/quarter.  Entries in the index show last and first names, the location of the event, and the volume and page of the record book wherein the actual certificate is to be found (legibility can be an issue;  the earlier index pages are handwritten).  

Once the volume and page have been specified, a copy of the certificate itself can be ordered from the GRO (which indeed was the source of most of the documents in the EWTH study).  
The GRO index pages that might possibly be relevant to the EWTH study have been downloaded;  copies are included with this study, and are to be found in the folders:

Hoare Birth Registrations
Hoare Marriage Records
Hoare, West, Death records
Hooper Births

In order to view these images of the GRO index pages, the "Djvu" browser plugin is needed.  Installers for this plugin for PC’s and for Macs are to be found among the files of this study, in the folder:

        "DjVu".  

Once the plugin is installed, you can navigate to the folders listed above, and double click on an index page file to open an image of it.
